Trail blazers one and all…the OP Reunion 2012 was sparked by Vicky James, from the FaceBook Group, Original Poweigans. A simple question turned into a full fledged Area High School(s) Reunion. The invitation was sent out across the internet, facebook, twitter and email campaigns to all who graduated from one of the 3 Poway High Schools (at the time): Abraxas, Poway and Mt Carmel, between 1960-1980.
Wondering how many ‘locals’ were still around, turns out most traveled and 6 people from different states made it for the event. 125 People came together to listen to The Full Circle band, Eat Jimmy’s Brick Pit BBQ and rock out as if they were 18 again….the music was epic and the walkers and wheel chairs checked at the door.
Old friends from a One Horse Town came together to reminisce and reconnect to the bonds of youth – still strong, even though the hair is grey or gone, and the Polident in place. The energy in the Poway Elks Lodge was electric.
High School Reunions after 30 years are all about the fun of youth. Gone are the gatherings where the career chatter dominates; no, at this point it’s really all about ‘cruisin’ forward and wishing we could do what we used to do, back in the day. The kids are grown, heading for (or already) retired;grand kids light the smiles and elder care fills our hearts.
The best years are ahead for this era of Powegians. They remember their ‘roots’ and foster the memories and friendships on the facebook group, Original Powegians. Yes, they are moving a wee bit slower, have a little more sass, but are still moving to the rhythms and the rock music that started in a neighbors garage in Poway, back in the day. Most everyone remembers the Dairy, Foster Freeze and Midland Elementary school. Poway may have gone and gotten to be a ‘big’ city in San Diego, but for these folks, it’ll always be home.
Facebook is a social magnet and a great catalyst for reconnecting. Many i this group shared the freedom of our youth that is no longer afforded kids today. If you lived in Poway, back in the day, and want to be apart of history and write a new chapter in your future, contact the group.
It was an honor and a privilege to be apart of this event; sharing time with brilliant minds, creative souls and talented musicians, all from a One Horse Town affectionately known as Poway, CA.
